In 2009, Wiemann Lamphere Architects, (WLA), worked with the Essex Police Department to establish a program of space requirements that would satisfy the department’s needs for the next 40 years. The new building, currently under construction, will allow the police department to grow and to gather together all of its separate components under one efficient roof. In the past, the department’s main office was wedged into a small building along with the Essex Town offices while the police records storage, detectives, training facilities, and vehicle storage was spread around town.
The new building will contain several green features, including:
• Wood frame with high-density cellulose insulation
• Garage made with cement blocks
• Locally produced brick and stone accents for building exterior
• LED fixtures on and around the exterior
• High-efficiency fluorescent fixtures with occupancy and infrared sensors throughout the interior
• Day-lighting solar tubes to illuminate the corridors and locker rooms
• Ultra-efficient fiberglass windows which will perform more than twice as well as the industry standard with an R-value of 7.1
• Heat recovery system, variable dampers, and automatic set-back thermostats
• 48KW photovoltaic system on the roof as well as solar hot water panels
• Ultra efficient, water-saving faucets, showers, toilets and urinals
