WLA was commissioned by Vermont Public Radio to study the feasibility of expanding their current operations within their existing site, originally built to serve as a veterinary hospital at the turn of the last century. The 100 year old building is located in an historic district of Ethan Allen Park in Colchester. The study sought to improve the functional relationships between departments and provide the necessary space to accommodate future news and music programming requirements. The expansion includes a new state-of-the-art studio for broadcasts, Internet streaming, and live performances. An important part of VPR’s redevelopment is their commitment to sustainability of the built environment. As such, part of the study was to provide comprehensive options for sustainable design by looking at: building orientation, passive design elements, active renewable energy systems, building materials (recycled and regional materials), and omitting the use of fossil fuels
