Montpelier 2030 Design Challenge

Montpelier, VT
Design Challenge

In 2016, an independent non-profit known as Net Zero Vermont launched a nationwide design competition to envision what a sustainable Montpelier, VT might look like in the year 2030.  The intent was to create a vision for a low carbon city that could serve as a model to others throughout the country.

Wiemann Lamphere decided to participate in this challenge and developed a concept that would meet the following parameters:

  1. Redevelop current parking lots into over 1,000 new residential dwelling units that would attract a younger generation to the city.

  2. Incorporate greenspace and pedestrian access to the riverfront.

  3. Create opportunities for improved pedestrian paths and shared infrastructure.

  4. Locate a conference center and additional shared office, commercial and hospitality spaces.

  5. Develop comprehensive strategies to address public transportation of the future.

  6. Build long-term climate-resilient infrastructure to handle the climate related events of tomorrow.

  7. Expand public art opportunities

Our team was invited to two rounds of submissions and was a finalist for the competition.
